Someone posts something like this here every so often. This subreddit is unsurprisingly full of this stuff. While we shouldn't discount the current state of education, I am also deeply skeptical of how representative this is of the broader system.

I know many people who work in education, at different levels of different schools, and they have nothing but horror stories to tell. School is now just glorified babysitting and stopping kids from either overdosing, getting pregnant, or committing suicide. Teachers and faculty spend so most of their time on harm reduction that teaching is almost non-existent.

Where I live, the quality and safety of the public schools is directly correlated to the property values in each school district. Wealthy areas have great schools with nearly perfect graduation rates. Inner ring suburbs have lower property values and less funding and more students with problems. Inner city schools have lots of funding but a lot of students with problems. The experience of students in public schools is highly variable.
The socioeconomic status of the parents of the students and the amount of money available for funding determine how good or bad public education is.

Absolutely false. Anyone who believes this should step outside and get away from doomer BS like this. I volunteered at a school and children were literally having fun with Scratch.

Yeah, let’s forget about reality because you volunteered at one school for a while.

There are some schools far far worse than others. The area and demographics make a huge difference

So many people on social media these days assume that the narratives they’re exposed to represent the average human experience. Doomers everywhere and frankly the best thing imo is to let them stew among themselves.
Obviously there are terrible schools and incredible ones and a whole range in between, it that sort of nuance doesn’t get clicks on twitter or TikTok.

Hang out in that subreddit for a while… this isn’t a singular report.
And those threads get a monumentally higher number of detailed responses than any education related thread here on HN.

Go to cscareerquestions and you would think everyone is getting laid off. It is called engagement bait.

Reddit is a cesspit of trolls, info ops, bots and advertising… all driven by the typical “driving engagement with negative emotions” style.
“Touch grass” is a phrase for a reason, at some point you aren’t dealing with a person who came to an opinion based on experience, they’re just a depressed parrot.

I always wonder what the commonality is across these poor performers. Is it all kids? Kids from home without fathers? Kids from particular areas? Seems like as a society we continue to slip but cannot identify solid commonalities... It's amongst the most important issue in modern society and article after article just cannot find any solution or underlying reasons. Society doesn't just devolve for no reason. What could it be?

Hey, at least your six year old elementary student hasn't shot you yet... School budgets are perhaps a little thin, but at least you're not struggling to pay out a $10 million lawsuit. So you've got that going for you.
